The Process

Participating in Our Honored Archives is designed to be clear, respectful, and comfortable at every stage. We approach each veteran’s story with care, and we ensure that you remain in control of what is shared, how it is recorded, and how it is preserved. Below is a guide to help you and your family understand what to expect.

1. Initial Contact and Interest

Your journey begins with a simple conversation. Whether you reach out to us directly or are referred by a family member, friend, or organization, we take time to listen and answer any questions you may have. There is no obligation to move forward. This step exists to help you feel informed and at ease.

2. Service Confirmation
We respectfully verify military service using standard documentation. This process is handled with discretion and care. Its purpose is to maintain the integrity of the historical record while honoring your service.
3. Service History Overview

If you choose to continue, we will gather basic background information about your military service. This may include your branch, years of service, units, and areas of deployment. This overview helps us prepare thoughtfully and ensures your interview reflects your unique experiences.
4. Pre-Interview Conversation

Before the formal interview, we meet with you to build rapport and discuss the process in greater detail. Together, we will talk through potential topics, your comfort level, and any areas you may prefer to avoid. This is your story, and you set the boundaries. We move at your pace.
5. Administrative and Release Paperwork

We review all necessary consent and release forms with you in clear, straightforward language. These documents explain how your interview may be preserved, archived, and shared. You will always have the opportunity to ask questions, set limitations, and make informed decisions about your level of participation.
6. Interview Scheduling and Preparation

We schedule the interview at a time and place that works best for you. You may choose to bring photographs, letters, or other personal items that hold meaning. Preparation is simple. We encourage you to reflect on your experiences, yet there is no need to rehearse. A natural conversation often brings forward the most meaningful moments.
7. The Interview Experience

The interview itself is conducted in a calm, respectful setting. It unfolds as a guided conversation rather than a rigid question and answer session. You are free to pause, take breaks, or redirect the discussion at any time. Our role is to listen with care and ensure your story is recorded with the dignity it deserves.
Throughout this entire process, your comfort, privacy, and agency remain our highest priorities. Our purpose is to honor your experiences, preserve your voice, and support you in sharing your story in a way that feels right to you and your family.

When all is done - your Interview will be delivered to the Library of Congress, and the National Archives!
